The Women of 80's RETRO, Part 1! From Rockabilly to Beat Music!

See Part 2: THE BROOD-"I Need You There/ I'll Put You Down" (1988)
http://youtube.com/watch?v=19f7LegF--0

The 70's youth was haunted by their 50's and 60's youth. From Pub Rock to Punk, The Runaways to The Ramones, rock'n'roll and leather returned. In between Punk and New Wave, revivalists created a sort of 'Nuevo Retro', reinventing the sounds of their youth for the future.

NIKKI & The CORVETTES (Detroit '80) keyed up Chuck Berry rock'n'roll; VENUS & THE RAZORBLADES' (L.A. 77) punk pop w/ Nikki Razorblade (red), and rockabilly-filly DYAN DIAMOND (79); JOAN JETT channeled Chuck (LA 76); RACHEL SWEET swung the pelvis (Akron 78); folkie JOAN ARMATRADING rewired rockabilly and rock styles (Birmingham, UK 77); psychobilly THE CRAMPS w/ Poison Ivy and Candy del Mar (Sacramento 76); deathrock 45 GRAVE w/ Dinah Cancer (LA 79); ICI PARIS w/ Marie Al Kah Raz, and Anicée Alvina (Paris 79); garage-abilly with The ZANTEES (Brooklyn 78) and The A-BONES (84), w/ drummer Miriam Linna; rock'n'girl-group -haunted SHEENA & The ROKKETS (Japan 79); German rockabillies The ACE CATS (82); proud revivalists The DEAD BEATS w/ leader Suzy May (US/UK 85); trash rock TEXAS TERRI BOMB (Austin 84) started out with The Killer Crows; moving into roots revival now with the cow punk of TEXACALA JONES & The HORSE HEADS (Austin 82); cowpunk supergroup SCREAMIN' SIRENS w/ Rosie Flores (LA 84); roots rock LONE JUSTICE w/ Maria McKee (LA 82); the folk rock of The TEXTONES w/ Carla Olson and Kathy Valentine (LA 79); k.d. lang retooled classic country (Alberta 87); lastly, leading us into retro Power Pop with The PRETENDERS w/ Chrissie Hynde; girl group punks The B-GIRLS (Toronto 80); pop rock with The ORCHIDS (Hollywood 80) in the wake of The Runaways; jangle-billy TIGER LILY w/ Laura Molina (LA 82); The DELMONTES w/ Julie Hepburn and Bernice Simpson (Edinburgh 79); power punk HOLLY & The ITALIANS w/ Holly Beth Vincent (LA 78); punk pop JANE AIRE & The BELVEDERES (Akron 78); olde-folke inflected rock from ROBIN LANE & The CHARTBUSTERS (Boston 80); mod wave NERVOUS REX w/ Trixie A. Baum, Diane Athey, and Miriam Linna (NY 80); SUZY SAXON & The ANGLOS (Richmond, VA 84); and timeless garage pop with The CATHOLIC GIRLS (Springfield, NJ 82).

NIKKI & The CORVETTES were Nikki Corvette with backup from Lori Jeri and Sally Dee. Fueled on the MC5 and The Stooges in Detroit, Nikki hit NYC as Punk was first exploding. The classic 1980 self-titled LP blends 50's Rock, sassy girl group, bubble gum pop melodies, punk's edge, and lots of unbridled lust. In their song, "Gimme My Radio," The Donnas sang, "I wanna be like Nikki Corvette." Nikki is on a fab comeback right now with new music and world tours.

These women ensured classic rock styles would not fade away. Because of them we now have The Donnas, The Raveonettes, Broadzilla, Kay Lenz, Rosie Flores, The Black Stripe, Marti Brom, Candye Kane, Neko Case, The Deadutantes, The Horror Pops, The Formaldebrides, Reverse Cowgirl, Lavay Smith & Her Red Hot Skillet Lickers, Betty Blowtorch, and the explosion of Varla culture.

  • In the late-'70s I worked for the Bomp! record label / Bomp! Record store on Laurel Canyon Blvd, North Hollywood.. Nikki & The Corvettes used to rehearse at night in the back. Devo, Iggy Pop, Flamin' Groovies, Josie Cotton, and The Romantics recorded for our label. Blondie, The Damned, Talking Heads, The Ramones, Dead Boys, Cheap Trick, and countless others made the pilgrimage to Bomp! We published a popular R&R magazine, too.

Bomp! was the coolest place to work in the days when Punk Ruled..
