Over the past four decades, the number of patients with end stage renal disease on chronic hemodialysis has increased significantly from 10,000 patients in the mid 1970's to over 300,000 patients today. An important component of the management of these patients is maintenance of vascular access. Morbidity and costs associated with hemodialysis access have increased dramatically with significant challenges posed by an aging patient population.
