The two southern ground hornbills call to each other at various times during the day. It is really interesting to hear some of the visitors say they at first thought the sound was piped in - they didn't realize it was actually coming from the birds. I have never liked hearing piped in animal sounds in a zoo. I think they distract visitors from listening for real animal sounds. And this video, I think, supports my opinion!

  • Happy Birthday, belatedly!

I hope you enjoy your trip to the Zoo today. I'm sorry the weather is not the best.

  • I've been going to the Franklin Park Zoo in Boston for years and the other day I heard this call for the first time. It is very disorienting ! I too thought it was coming from somewhere else. It was my 51st birthday, June 02. I considered it a great present. I will try to see your birds in Philadelphia. It just so happens, I am going tomorrow !
