Rockville High School in Vernon CT performs a down firefighter rescue drill, Friday April 3, 2009. The Fire Technology Class at Rockville High is the only program like it in Connecticut. The goal of the program is to promote youth involvement in the local fire department. The course features both class room and hands on training using equipment and apparatus from the local fire department. Volunteer fire departments have found their ranks shrinking with the need for more training and fewer people willing or able to participate. Since the start of the program 8 years ago more than 20 students have gone on to join the local Town of Vernon Fire Department. Vernon's need is more acute than most towns it size. With a population of just over 28,000, Vernon is the largest all volunteer fire department in the State of Connecticut. The course instructor is Steve Augustus http://www.rockvillehighschool.org/
