Grove Street

Shot on 16mm b&w reversal with a Bolex H16; edited on Final Cut.

Thanks to Martha Colburn for the film stock;
and to Mel Friendling and the rest of the Spring 2009 16mm class at New School;
and Pac Lab, for getting all those awesome hairs and squigglies in there!

Note about the music: I was playing with YouTube's AudioSwap, and it permanently embedded the song that's on there now. It works, but the film is originally silent.

  • Man, top notch shooting. Would love to know how to create such a thing, you use a vintage Bolex H16 you say? and 16mm... I'm really a beginner here so I'm going to presume that it can only shoot B&W. I'd be interested if you have any tips or anything at all to share with me.

  • @mandolaman12

    thanks.. so the bolex shoots whatever kind of film you put in it.. color or b&w, or whatever else they can come up with on16mm

  • @mandolaman12 hey man, sorry my last comment wasn't very helpful, so here's another:

    i stuttered my shooting finger and played with the frame rate for shifty-time.

    also played with the rewind key, cranking the film back and double exposing the film, while closing the aperture a notch or two for each superimposed layer (to avoid overexposure.. 2X exposing lets too much light in, so the composite ends up brighter. u can see how some parts in this film get brighter when there are 2 or more layers)

  • @mandolaman12 also, for titles, an easy way to get them is to make an image with the title on a black background, and shoot it off the computer screen.. if the letters are bright enough, they'll superimpose well over other shots you shoot. if you can see unwanted pixels, just offset the camera's focus very slightly. i didn't do it in this film, but i have on later ones that haven't been transferred to video yet.
