this song is like playing jacks in my mouth 'til my tongue bleeds out my ears. that's what i was thinkin' anyway, as i fantasized about her spanking me senseless with that guitar. snap...! <3 -frank- / model daughters
Thanks for posting this - I love this woman! She did this as a hidden track at the end of the first Be Good Tanyas album (Blue Train). I don't know the Hurston version, but there's a lot of overlap between Holland and the BGT's song (incl. the beans!) and Lead Belly's rendition of Take This Hammer (/watch?v=DuzdTHOE67k), a.k.a. Spike Driver Blues, about John Henry. (See also Mississippi John Hurt's version: /watch?v=9oJ9hBpCva8). ...Again, thanks for posting this!
Thanks a lot! And is it called "mule on the mountain?" I've purged the internet and find nothing. I do find one old song with that name on itunes, but sounds nothing like it.
Its a song Zora Neale Hurston collected when she was working for the Lomaxs in the negro south. There are a ton of verisons of this traditional song, but the tune is generally the same. I think parts of this verison of the song comes from Mississippi.
I absolutely love this song. Probably the most "front porch" thing I've ever heard. (which I mean in a good way.) Does anyone know where this comes from? Is it a cover? Is it on an album? Help me, please help me.
