To make it easier for the winch monkey I've made both front and rear hydraulic winch dogs pnematically controlled via a ARB compressor Festo valves and cylinders

  • hi mate, is a that a farley 525 winch? I have just picked one of those up and looking to do exactly what you've just done. Don't have much experience with pneumatics, do you have any tips/advice on cylinder size? thanks ruu

  • The winch is a Landrover winch as fitted as long ago as the 1950's! The pump runs off the pto on the gearbox and is a Dowty. Although not the quickest they seem to be bulletproof. I have manged to bend a 4 tonne "D" shackle with it!

The cylinder size I am using is 20mm dia.

The stroke length depends on your linkage set up. The longer the stroke length the better the mechanical advantage you will get if you use all the stroke.I used Festo stuff and they do 12VDC coils for the valves to.

  • I assume this is to engage the clutch from the cab after someone else freewheeled the cable to the load.

Will this allow you to disconnect under load?

  • No this will not allow you to disconnect under load.

I don't think that would be a good idea some how!

However it does speed up the process if your winchman has gone off with the other end of the cableto hook around a tree. As soon as he gives the thumbs up click it in from inside the cab and away you go!

Ok so its not the fastest winch in the world but it cost me 150gbp and will pull me out of anything!

  • @Yellayomper sorry, never thanked you for your reply :-)

  • Do you think I can run that from the pump for my snowplow? The pump runs off of a belt.I like this better than electric because their is no second battery to carry. Also I do not need to mount a pto.

I know the snowplow is very heavy, and the ram with no plow on can lift nearly half a ton.

  • Them winches pull anything the more oil the better they pull. The origional dog casing always gets the lever broken off when surplus cable gets rapped around it due to the drum brake screw being seized up

  • i-n-t-e-r-e-s-t-i-n-g!
