As for not creating, Little Big Planet is a good example of the user being able to create some pretty awesome levels without having to learn machine code or any form of programming language. But if you consider that too limited then fair do's, at least you dont have to learn how to program from scratch. Again whether or not you like that kind of thing is personal preference, but being shit at maths I personally find the programming side of things boring as hell.

How irrelevant. So your only counting consoles? Riiiiight...
Anyway, I dont agree that i cant appreciate the spectrum, Being born in 1990 doesn't help my case I guess for not experiencing it at the time but it's not like I was completely unaware of 80's micro's. My first console was a SNES and I still consider it to be the most fun system ive ever owned, I dont give a rats ass about 'appreciation', I just like good games and the speccy had quite a few imo.

Are you havin' a laugh? Flash on consoles? I was talking about consoles where kids of today can only play and not create. Do keep up.
As you weren't around in the Spectrum Years you can't appreciate that it was just as big as today's gaming. And there was more to it than the turn-on-and-play of consoles. I think PC gaming will come out its slump with a swing back to games created created by hobbyists. You can only have so much of Mario.

Are YOU having a laugh?
Ever heard of flash? The place where somebody can also make something to not only share with their friends but the entire internet?
If the subject has changed from me supposedly bashing the spectrum (which i werent btw, just its overly defensive fanbase) then I think my answers knocked a few nails on the head...

are you havin' a laugh? ask anyone in their thirties about Horace Goes Skiing and they will tell you! just because you weren't there doesn't mean it wasn't as big as the game scene of today.
at least with a Spectrum you would have a go at writing your own code (and we did!). today's kids can only play on a console. play, play and more play. they can't learn any programming on their consoles. they can't produce stuff to share with their friends.

the whole proliferation of the "nintendo created everything" ideal seriously needs to be stopped somewhere, though unfortunately it's probably too late now, Super Mario Bros = update of Pac Land, The Legend of Zelda did not create a genre, it just polished up and cemented ideas from other games that had been widely available on other formats for years.
-
Also you should understand that it only takes 1 person to be inspired by a game for it to have an impact on the industry, 90% of the UK developers would've had experience with the spectrum, these people who went on to make stuff like GTA, Tomb Raider, Golden Eye, I could list 100s of games if I wanted to, the French creator of Alone in the Dark, the first true survival horror game stated that Alien 8 was one of his favourite games ever made.
-
first you talk about "worthwhile impact" and then change your tune to just talking about fame, celine dion is pretty famous, that doesn't automatically mean she's worthwhile does it?
-
..and that makes me a complete retard does it?
Listen carefully, what i'm saying is that more people recognize Mario and Zelda over anything on the spectrum for obvious reasons. The main one being that the NES, mega drive etc reached a much larger audience than the spectrum ever did. Then the spectrum and British micro elite just turn around and pass these consoles off as 'expensive toys' because they not a micro
Why bring 'who started the genre' in things when I wasn't even talking about that!?
You must mean the CodeMasters lads then?

@jesusarnold Part of the reason is that Nintendo was well established and most people don't know is the company itseld is almost 121 years old. On topic, I just cracked out my Z88 today. Perfect shape. Original cardboard sleeve and thin leather case. Good times.
