This has been hard to get the feel for. I'm still not consistent in my ability. The right pressure and speed needed to create the specific friction of the skin over the Ding took quite a bit of fruitless practice on my part.
As far as suggestions go - on the 1st Gen Hanghang I can't make it sing with a dry finger, but with 2nd Gen and Integral Hanghang a dry finger will do the trick. Playing around with it I've found that the sweet spots are along two lines, one drawn from the high note to the low and one at 90 degrees to that line. Also, along that line there seems to be a sweet spot on the 'shoulder' of the Ding. You can find the right pressure when you start feeling a slight 'buzzing' against your skin as you draw across the Ding. You skin shouldn't slide effortlessly. It is the friction between your skin and the metal that causing the singing. Your first sound might be an un-musical and harsh note, but if you follow the feeling in your finger and make slight adjustments you can find the sweetness.

  • is this an integral?

  • @napydred - No, it is a New Generation/2nd Generation model (pre Integral).

  • hello, hey would you tell me please where or how to buy a panart hang? cheers! :D

  • @sixthell - Things have changed over the years and sadly there isn't a way to get the types of Hanghang that you see on YouTube from PANArt. PANArt i now only makes what they call a 'Free Integral Hang' and the way to get it is to develop a good understanding of their intentions (with much research) and to write a letter stating your interest in obtaining one.

Almost all that information can be found at a website called Hangblog. You can Google it (youtube hates links).

    Good luck!

  • A little violin rosin on your palm or finger tips helps A LOT.

  • I've heard that can help, but I try to avoid putting any substances on the Hang. One doesn't need rosin with some practice. This was a recording of some of my first attempts.

    thanx CIFERENCE-SYMPHONY

  • That has possibilities. Two of those, or three, could make some interesting sounds.

  • @shinobue111 - Yes. The Integral Hang has a rougher texture with the brushed on brass, so it takes a slightly different touch, but it can sing as well. The First Generation Hang are more difficult as the Ding is smooth. As I understand it moisture helps, but I've not experimented enough to be sure myself.

  • Can you get you Integral Hang to do this too?
