Keith Olbermann Worst: HIV AIDS, Jesse Helms, Elizabeth Dole

I simply have no words in the face of Liddy Dole's attempt to attach Jesse Helms' name to the PEPFAR renewal. Helms did everything he could to ensure the deaths of thousands of gay men from HIV in the 1980s and 1990s; he never recanted his despicable hatred of those who struggled alone with this disease in the darkest days of the epidemic, and did all he could to make sure nothing was ever done to help them. That he should be honored now, especially when he was single-handedly responsible for adding a unique stigma to HIV-positive people in immigration law is just ... well, unfathomable.

Sen. Elizabeth Dole (R-NC) yesterday introduced an amendment that would have added the name of Jesse Helms to the title of the HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria bill that is before the Senate. Helms, who died eleven days ago, was the nation's most vociferous foe of federal funding for HIV/AIDS programs from the epidemic's beginning until he left the Senate.

The name of the Act proposed in S. 2731 is "Tom Lantos and Henry J. Hyde United States Global Leadership Against HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria Reauthorization Act of 2008". The Act would be named after former Reps. Tom Lantos (D-CA-12) and Henry Hyde (R-IL-06), who worked together in their last years in Congress to achieve bipartisan support for federal funding for the fight against these diseases. Sen. Dole apparently thought the title was missing something. From the Congressional Record:

On page 1, line 5, strike "and Henry J. Hyde" and insert ", Henry J. Hyde, and Jesse Helms".

Recall that Helms said that gays caused the AIDS epidemic and victimized Ryan White, threaten the survival of the American family, are in a battle against American values, and have the ultimate aim of having the American people accept "their perverted lifestyle".

HIV/AIDS didn't originate with gays though... it's just easier to transmit during anal sex because guys don't have vaginal fluids to fight against potential body infection.... I wouldn't be using the word "many" though... most ppl in the US with AIDS are straight!

My Sister is a HIV Professor in New York!!!! in America Heterosexuals have now won the infection war from HIV not Gay men get your facts right. maybe back in the 1970s is was a gay disease but not anymore. Jesse Helms worked tirelessly to get funding for AIDS relief in Africa. He is largely responsible for the massive reduction in HIV cases on that continent.
