Criminally overlooked games #3: Downtown special

In this series, I hope to bring to light a few games overshadowed by more popular titles.

Instead of getting preachy, I let the games speak for themselves. These segments aim to highlight what makes these games worthy of mention, and hopefully a few more people will get to experience them.

While I wouldn't say this game was completely overlooked on it's release, i've noticed that anytime I mention it to someone not native to Japan I am met with derision.

Maybe the title is a bit too long and intimidating, maybe it's been too long since it's initial release, or maybe it's the language barrier. I've yet to find the reason.

This is basically River city ransom set in feudal Japan, with many additions and improvements on the original Riki and Kunio game. Myriad new attacks, AI controlled teammates, a roster of fighters to acquire - each with their own unique abilities, new weapons and a full blown physics engine that accounts for gravity, friction, inertia, and even water properties. Plus it has quite a few secrets and things to find along the way.

While it isn't difficult in the least, and turning the physics to EX mode tends to cause slow-down, River city devotees or fans of Technos in general owe it to themselves to check it out.

It's especially fun over kaillera if you can manage to find someone to play with.

Not necessarily. The recording isn't exactly a problem, it's whatever magic formula youtube used to re-compress the video I uploaded that altered the frame rate unfavorably.

like that one skill you learned from beating Godai, I never figured out what it is and how to use it... (if you know Godai, that one person in River City Ransom that guards the second floor of Reihou High. He has some other names in this game)

@BigBangBlitz idk, it feels like it is official, but then again, I only have the rom, not the actual cartridge =P, good list though, I agree with most of your games about being underrated
