ALLAH swt has Himself divided us into different colors, different lands, different looks and different languages so that we may recognize each other. I dunt think Nationalism itself is Haram but the way sometimes it is carried out. Like Arab and ajami concept, Nazi concept in Germany, Gentile concept in Judiasm. SO the prophet making a treat with the people of huvadia is under the guidance of Allah swt. Making treaty tallking to the kuffar is different from making them ur aouliya(protectors and friends).
