In this interview excerpt, Ruth Gruber, noted author, former journalist, government official, refugee worker and humanitarian rescuer, recalls attending one day of the 1945-46 trial before the International Military Tribunal at Nuremberg of the principal Nazi war criminals. She was accompanied by U.S. lawyer Bartley Cavanaugh Crum and by her brother, Dr. Irving Gruber, a Captain in the U.S. 9th Army. She recalls seeing the defendants, their cells, the 800-book library in the Palace of Justice (courthouse) building, and U.S. Army film of refugees throughout Europe, and she compares the circumstances of the Nuremberg defendants with the circumstances of the displaced persons (DPs) she had visited in nearby DP camps. This interview was conducted on November 2, 2010.
