@TheQjd Sorry, he wasn't the first European in America - he was over 500 years late for that one.

It's fair to say that Columbus was the first European to discover America, and thus starts recorded history in the New World.

Did Newton discover gravity? No, not in the direct sense but he made the entire world understand a theory about how the universe works. Same with Columbus. What did Leif Erickson do in the America's, nothing. Until about 50 years ago most scholars doubted the fact that he actually reached North America. Chinese did nothing also a theory. But Columbus set the precedent and started us on the path to this great country, USA. He is an American Hero lie about it or not.

The only difference between Hitler and Columbus is that Columbus was successful in causing the extinction of certain races and the enslaving of others. All for gold and in the name of religion. Yet Hitler who did not fully succeed went down in history as a mad man. Not too many bright bulbs out there.

You morons, Columbus is celebrated because he was the first person from developed civilization who found the new lands, and placed them properly on the world map. Of course, I wkow the vikings were here earlier, and maybe the chinese, but they didnt create maps that were shared with the civilized world. That the difference.
American Indians were here first....Saying he 'Discovered' America ..is like me saying I discovered my neighbors back yard and then claiming it....Columbus and his band of misfits and outcast were nothing but trouble from the start.

facts? hardly.1) east india trading company was chartered by the ENGLISH queen elizabeth 1 in 1600--over a hundred years after columbus. 2) the "fact" that china discovered america in 1421--FICTION!! 3)5000 year old mesopotamian coin?? the oldest coin in the world was minted in Lydia, some 2600 years ago, and were so primative that you can barely recognize the lion head on them--a map of the world would be impossible!!
get at least a couple of l ACTUAL facts, and you might be able to persuade...
