Stanley Jasspon Kunitz (July 29, 1905--May 14, 2006) was a noted American poet who served two years (1974--1976) as the Consultant in Poetry to the Library of Congress (a precursor to the modern Poet Laureate program), and served another year as United States Poet Laureate in 2000.

I heard this read aloud on NPR the other day. It took me awhile to find it, but I couldn't put anything else up besides this man reading his own poem. The age in his voice makes the poem that much more meaningful...at least to me it did.

  • can anyone PLEASE tell me what this poem is about? I think it's about different life experiences and being able to move on and look toward the future, but I could be wrong. PLEASE help me!

It's probably something a little different for everyone, but I think in essence it's about a persons life (Kunitz in this case) when they are nearer to the end of it than they are to the beginning of it. Slightly bittersweet, but with a core of hope and good memories. My take....YMMV.

  • A most thought provoking; i thought of sening a dopy to a couple of men in prison; truley messed over by lest than hones or compantent laywer. Is " justice" to win a "conviciton" or can we vomit to "restoration"? "Lawyer" does not equate with 'Justice"; BUt the other ideas expressed are moving. We need to help our oung people to see their potential and cast them aside as litter.

  • This poem breaks my heart every time I read it - but even more so when I hear it read by Mr. Kunitz himself.
