On the opening night of the US tour, Joanna Newsom performed at Calvin College. After the show, all people were invited to stay for an artist conversation where audience members could ask questions to Joanna Newsom and band mates. The resulting conversation was excellent.

Some of the questions might be unclear, so I transcribed them the best I could.
____________

(0:00) q8. What kind of advice would you give to aspiring songwriters

(1:55) q9. I sort of have a question that follows up on that for maybe all three of you. This last record, in partciular, is pretty dense and longer compared to most other things that get put out. I think that's really great and impressive. But to what extent do you think about the audience or think about the reaction that it will get given ...There's less and less people that want to put out a full length record or listen to an album in that format or in that way with as much attention to detail that you're putting into it, do you let that shape how you create it or do you just make what you want to make

(5:30) Q10. host: We put together a live concert season here. We love recorded music, but there's something very special about live, and it happened tonight. I'm not an artist myself, so I don't fully understand what is it that happens, but I observe it over and over again this relationship that occurs and it seems as if the audience is an active participant. There is something that they bring that can change the performance quite a bit. I've watched artists raise the bar because of the audience. So what are the qualities of a good audience, so that we know what to do.

  • That professor is a douche. He totally diffuses Joanna's naughty little joke about Neil selling his body. You get the feeling he is a bit uptight :)

  • @neoliberalism

To be fair, this is a Christian college, and he was trying to have a thoughtful and educated discussion.

  • Who does that professor think he's talking to, third graders??? If they like Joanna they are obviously reflecting human beings and aren't there to just swing their hair around and rock out to the beat.

Even if he felt he had to say what he said, there is a less condescending way to go about it. Pompous asshole.

Neal should sell his body to buy shoes.

  • I found it to be a very thoughtful, educated discussion... no reason to hide the more fun, playful side of her personality.
