The hymn "The Love of God" played on Sweetee, a McSpadden mountain dulcimer tuned DAdd and recorded with a Canon PowerShot S2 IS.

"Could we with ink the ocean fill,
And were the skies of parchment made,
Were every stalk on earth a quill,
And every man a scribe by trade,
To write the love of God above,
Would drain the ocean dry.
Nor could the scroll contain the whole,
Though stretched from sky to sky."

  • Simply beautiful. How did you find the tabs on this song for dulcimer? I would love to play and sing this song.

  • Thanks for the kind words. I don't have any tab for this tune. It's one of my favorite hymns and I just play it straight out of my noggin. It is real easy to play in DAD using D, A, and G chords.

  • Beautiful song, and great playing! Please keep posting more!

What's that very interesting-looking instument behind you? Is it a guitar that looks like a viola or cello?

  • Thanks! On the right is a tenor Viola da Gamba. On the left is an Ovation Custom Balladeer guitar.

  • Nice! Please post a video playing the Viola da Gamba, as I don't think I've seen one played before! :)

  • I'll record one soon but my playing is still a little rough. It's not near as easy to play (well) as the dulcimer or guitar. My wife makes comments about "moaning cows"...

  • One of my favorite all-time songs. I sing and play it on the guitar. I've changed a few minds with this one -- y'know, folks who didn't think they liked hymns and all. It's got to be one of the most powerful ever written. And you did a beautiful job. Thanks, man. You're a blessing.

  • We are hear in London looking ayour wonderful videos, may God bless you. Keep your faith because one day our Lord willl come again.

  • Thank you for recording this and sharing it. This was one of the hymns we sang at my wife's funeral just a few weeks ago.
