There are limitless possibilities when improvising on the drumset! That's what makes it so fun, exciting and special that we can create from within, based on our own unique experiences and emotions. No drummers footprint is quite the same. We all have our own way of feeling and expressing ourselves through our instruments. I hope this video gives you some insight on how you can play a basic foot pattern/ostinato, and improvise with your hands to create your own unique ideas and solos.

  • solid improv man. How long have you been playing and what kind of kit is that?

  • Thanks for the kind words! Been playing 30+ years. The drumkit is a Taye. I actually have to put new heads on all the drums but I've always loved the sound I get out of them! They are very well-crafted and have unique hardware adjustments and combinations.

  • i love the way you can tell the way certain drummers were in high school band. They tend to be very focused upon the snare and rolls and not so much on the feet. good sticking tho

    still great improv. good work

  • im pretty sure his cymbals go like this from left to right:

Crash, splash, splash, crash, ride, china, and i think theres a little splash under the china

  • Fantastic improv. I can certainly learn some stuff from it. What are the names of those small cymbals from left to right? Really nice!

  • To anybody out there who thinks they are too old to learn, I'm a 41 year old CHICK taking lessons from "the man" here. Its only been just over a year, but with JT's instruction I TOTALLY ROCK!!!
