In an interview with Rick Alverson: I pitched Sharon the idea of the contrast between the 17th century Puritan and the bodies floating, and expanded it from there once we found a location. I kept joking about making Chaucer and Rembrandt trendy again. The image of the Puritan came about because I have a certain obsession with giving American utopian-ism a hard time! I have this idea of stripped religious freedom and how it's a crazy contrast with the concept of absolute freedom.
