Oud: Semai Nahawand-Rawhi Khammash عزف عود - سماعي نهاوند - روحي الخماش

I'm playing the late Rawhi Khammash's semai Nahawand. This amazing composer was a real genius in the music world. He was born in 1923, and was a quite smart kid. He played the tough musical pieces at a very early age, quite professionally at age of 10 !
In 1948 Khammash traveled to Iraq and resided there till he passed away in 1998. During those years he shined as a brilliant musician and contributed immensely to Iraqi music as we know it today. He taught at the school of music and fine arts in Baghdad, and was a member of the famous band (Khumasi Al Funoon Al Jamilah; Fine Arts Quintet Band), starting mid 70's. Other members of this bank also included Ghanim Haddad (born in 1925); violin, Salem Hussein Al-Ameer (born in 1923); Kanun, Hussein Qaddoori (1934-2006), cello, and Hussein Abdullah (1905-1982) on Riqq.
One amazing aspect of this brilliant musician and composer is that his music although mostly played on oud - solo or in groups -, I very strongly believe it will just sound amazingly perfect if played in orchestra !
By the way, the "lady in red" dancing with the 4th Khanah is Maria Pages (what a great dancer !).

A "Semai" is a musical form, based upon a special rhythm (usually 10/8), and is composed of 4 sections (each known as a "Khanah") and a repeated part known as "Taslim". However, the forth Khanah is usually faster, and follows a different rhythm (3/4, 7/8 or 10/16).

السماعي هو أحد أشكال التأليف الموسيقي (قالب)، ويكون متبعا لإيقاع يسمى السماعي الثقيل 10/8 و يتكون عادة من أربعة مقاطع كل منها يسمى الخانة، بالإضافة لجزء متكرر يسمى التسليم". عادة تكون الخانات الثلاث الأول متبعة لإيقاع السماعي ثقيل أما الخانة الأخيرة فتكون أسرع عموما وتتبع أيقاعات أخرى مثل: 3/4 أو 7/8 أو 10/16
