Dan Snow travels back to a seething Manhattan in the throes of the industrial revolution. Millions fled persecution, poverty and famine in Europe in the 19th century in search of the Promised Land. When they arrived what they found was even worse than what they'd left behind. New York was a city consumed by filth and corruption, its massive immigrant population crammed together in the slums of Lower Manhattan. Dan succumbs to some of the deadly disease-carrying parasites that thrived in the filthy, overcrowded tenement buildings. He has a go at cooking with some cutting edge 19th century ingredients - clothes dye and floor cleaner - added to disguise reeking fetid meat. And he marvels at some of the incredible feats of engineering that transformed not just the city, but the world.

  • The US biggest engineering project in the US was the interstate highways

  • @screenpuller

omg my dad told me that one too. then the bear wiped himself with the rabbit. do you suppose thats why Charmin tissue has the BEARS for the new ultra soft? that so funny

  • we see the bed bugs but why must he put on his skin? ny still has bedbugs. i saw reports that they are in movie theatres, the nike shop had to shut down to be treated for bedbugs. that place is still nasty. don't mention the dam rats.

  • WASP's exploiting the Irish. Same in the old world as well as the new world. Up the Irish

  • @lovemusic4evs Hopefully they took advantage of the occasional flushing those hydrants need, rather than just setting one off randomly.

  • @Kowakian This documentary uses CGI backgrounds a few times. Also it's about New York City's history, you can't deny with the exponential growth the city faced had caused the creation of Slums. New York City was one of the filthiest cities in America, and today it probably still makes the top 20. Now a days NYC is pretty clean, and livable, but the waste it pumps out is mostly invisible. Also NYC has a reputation as a dirty city, though it's pretty clean it still holds the reputation.

  • @TheVolure You would probably like the other 2 episodes. Paris and London.

  • thanks for uploading!

  • Was filthy? Hahaha, this guy obviously never visited New York, NY background was probably CGI.

  • amazing how they had invented the electric car back in the days.. what a shame that they didn't continue to push this innovation..
