This novel fusion of car-chase film and spooky horror became a surprise box-office hit in 1975. The story begins with car enthusiasts Frank (Warren Oates) and Roger (Peter Fonda) taking their wives, Kelly (Lara Parker) and Alice (Loretta Swit), on a vacation in a recreational vehicle. Their camping trip goes horribly awry when Frank and Roger accidentally stumble upon a group of hooded Satanists committing a human sacrifice. The cultists give chase and the two couples barely escape with their lives. They go to the local police for help, but the officers can find no evidence to back up the story and send the two couples on their way. As they try to continue their vacation, strange events continue to occur that culminate in the four vacationers and their cultist tormentors having a brutal automotive showdown on the open road. Will they survive? Watch and see!

  • i hate those noon sirens

  • Nice bit with the wives jumping out of their mid-1970's pantsuits in fearful guilt when the siren goes off just as they leave the library with the books stashed in one's purse.

  • I got lucky. When I was eleven my aunt took me to see this movie because she mistook it for a movie about motorcycle racing. She got so into it she let me stay and watch it as long as I promised not to tell my parents.

  • @andy65guitar Remember, it's a small backwoods town, and the movie did not imply every single eprson was a Satanist, but the majority certainly were. And this is totally believable, esp in a small town.

  • the motor cycle rider is hot! ;) is that peter fonda?

  • You know you're in a high-class 'burg when the law enforcement officer is named 'BOOGER".

  • I like that comment from Warren Oats. "Well this time they ran out of cats."

  • The whole bloody town are Satanists? What are the odds? Like I said the slow motion ending with the chanting was terryfing when I was a kid.

  • I guess the 70's was a good decade for Satan movies. The Omen The Excocist etc. They all scared me and I loved it! People should make more movies that just scare the hell outta you! No blood just terror and suspense. It does seem to be coming back of late. I need more scary stuff without the predictability.
