  • The procedure for getting hibernate to work with a swap file is different from that used to get it working with a swap partition, and they don't play nicely with each other (to the extent of ending up with a corrupted file file system, if you can resume at all), although the foul play is at the hands of swap files in this case, so basically, best to avoid if you're hibernating laptops.

  • Agreed -- in that instance, it would be a horrifying reason to add a swap file. :)

  • N.B. If you're trying to add swap space to get your laptop hibernate function to work, then combining the space of a (too small) swap partition, and a (supplementary) swap file is going to cause you more problems than it solves, believe me. It's one of those rare situations where it's easier to resize your swap partition (very carefully).
