Here is Joey at a little over 5 weeks old. Joey hatched out of a fertile egg purchased in Trader Joes egg case. It was not sold to be used to incubate, but to eat as is. We used it in my child's science project for elementary school. It was about whether or not grocery store eggs can develop. Yup. But the box was labeled fertile, so the odds on Joey developing into a chick were better than the standard eggs we incubated.

We still are not positive on the gender. We are hoping for a pullet (hen.)

  • So what does this mean? Are TJ eggs safe to eat?

  • @Bobster986

Yes, the eggs are safe to eat. Generally, most people would not be able to tell they were fertile unless the eggs were incubated. Also, in the stores, eggs are normally infertile unless labeled fertile.

Anyway, until industrialized farming took over in the 20th century, everyone ate fertilized eggs from small flocks with roosters around.

  • My family eats fertilized eggs every day, no harm here. If anything you might see a blood spot smaller than a pin head. This can be caused by the egg being fertile and or the momma hen being stressed. I know my eggs are safer than store bought eggs because I know what my chickens eat.

  • one questions when you bought these eggs were they in an egg carton in the refrigerator? and for how long? n another question do you think all natural eggs are fertilized ?

  • @huggabelchick they would have to accept it without a question i kno this cuz my mom works at trader joes!

  • @themadscientest 0_0 i can imagen that a person walking in and puting an chicken on the counter and saying ''this is what i got for one of your eggs i wanna return it '' then the guy at the counter faits.

  • you should try to get a return

  • If they're fresh enough, they will. They don't have a very high hatch rate- 50 to 75 percent, but it has been done many times before.

  • omg usually refrigerated fertile eggs dont hatch!!! lol thats cool

  • that is a good luck chicken!
