This is how you setup DNS manually. You can let windows setup for you or you can manually set it up. This will be a good practice to learn. This way you will know how to set it up both manually and automatically ( I will be uploading that video soon)

  • I have an DNS server cofigured just like this... it works perfectly in my local network, but it wont work out on the internet. I have allowed the dns in firewall on the server, and the firewall on the router is off completely, but still when I try to get to my website from outside... it doesn't work. I don't know what else to do, everything is working fine localy, but not out on the internet. Does DNS relies on ICMP (ping)? Because my ISP blocks ICMP on their network. Please help!

  • @bluesmoke21 You need to specify on your router an exception for your internal DNS so that it is pingable from the outside and then on your isp side, specify your DNS ip to point to your website. So go on godaddy or wherever is your account and specify your dns ip, but remember to create a nat exception for your dns in your router so that it is see'able (is that a word) from the outside world. In my case, i have an external DNS and internal DNS, for outside and inside use only.

  • Speak up!!

  • excuse me for the stupid question, im an IT systems engineer and im trying to get to grips with dns and networking. can you please anser this question (anyone!) if i configure the DNS of my server will that allow other computers to find my domain if they are on the same network?

i have never configured a server from scratch and im just trying to learn now... thanks for your help and informative videos

  • @bluesmoke21 Thanks helpt a bit :) But stop smashing your keys!!

  • I am having an issue with where dns is not finding my AD or my domain name .org

  • @howithink Thanks man, the problem was that I was using private IP on the server, and on the register I passed the DNS server name with external IP address... And since the private IPs are not routable, it didn't work. After many trials and errors, I realized that it was wrong, and I must have public IP on the NIC of the server, so I bought an subnet with 6 IP addresses and configured the router accordly, then I changed the IP from the registar to poing to the interior IP address.
