We found this salmon shark (Lamna ditropis) on Mad River Beach near Arcata, in Humboldt County, California. They look a lot like small white sharks, but the grey color under the snout and the shape of the teeth are handy identifiers. This one looked like it may have been bitten by a larger shark.

  • Nice find! I have been trying for weeks to get a good photo of L. ditropis. Every so often one of the boats will bring one in, but I just keep missing my chance. In one instance a 200 kg specimen was on the docks for 7 hours (I could even see part of it from my work area!) then at first opportunity I went to photograph it and it had been hauled away 30 minutes before I could get to it. I am still confident that the opportunity will arise before I leave the Aleutians.

  • @LithodidMan Wow, that was a big one on the dock. Good luck getting some pics.

  • He must have been feeding on the salmon offshore. He has some sharp teeth.
