March 15th 2009, just after sunset, the Space Shuttle Discovery took off on mission STS119. We were there viewing it 3.2 miles away at the Vehicle Assembly Building (VAB) on a perfect evening with cloudless sky. As the vehicle rose up it passed into sunlight and the contrail remained lit up in wonderful colors, long after the rocket was gone. This video also covers the separation of the boosters and on-going flight of the shuttle under its own engines.

  • This site in front of the VAB is located actually 3.2 miles directly west of pad 39A, not 2 miles. No one is as close as 2 miles. And if it was only 2 miles you would have picked up the sound 5-6 seconds sooner than was recorded here since the speed of sound is 1,086 feet per second so about 5 seconds per mile.

  • Thank you for the corrections. I hope this does not detract from your enjoyment of the video
