Jeremy Clarkson provoked outrage last night after he said that those striking should be shot.

Speaking on the BBC's One Show he said that government workers refusing to work should be killed in front of their families.

Clarkson, who presents the BBC's Top Gear show, said: 'Frankly I would have them all shot. I would take them all outside and execute them in front of their families.

'I mean how dare they go on strike when they have these gilt edged pensions that are being guaranteed while the rest have to work.'

The comments immediately provoked complaints with 'Jeremy Clarkson' becoming the top trending topic worldwide on social networking website Twitter.

Former deputy prime minister John Prescott tweeted: 'I know Jeremy Clarkson likes winding people up but it's worth pointing out he gets £1m a year from the licence fee/public sector.'

Left-wing blog Labour Matters encouraged viewers to complain to the BBC and posted contact details for the corporation on Twitter.

Later in the programme Clarkson went on to complain about train delays caused by people committing suicide on the railways.

If you look at what he's actually saying I agree with him. Striking is pointless and public servants get paid too much, get too many benefits and do half as much work as everybody else. The Unions are too pushy, outdated and want ludicrous things now. He just put it in a 'different' way that he obviously doesn't mean.
