"The people have the power to redeem the work of fools"

The great Patti Smith moved us all to tears with her beautiful poem in honor of Martin Luther King and in Occupy Wall Street Solidarity during the #J15 Candlelight Vigil at Riverside Church tonight, reminding us that it is the people who have the power. Thank you Patti and thank you for donating that beautiful tent with the colored letters for The People's Library!

With messages from Russell Simmons, Yoko Ono and so many more to a packed house it was an amazing night of hope

Occupy!

  • Yesterday when the people of Wisconsin delivered 1.9 million signatures to recall Scott Walker, I just thought of her words and cried...I am so moved with this country and what the people are doing...this is my second revolution, I'm so proud to be around for this one. Solidarity. Occupy!

  • As in all true art, there is no expiration date, and seemed so perfectly appropriate for our movement. "the people have the power to redeem the work of fools" if that isn't going on now, I don't know what is.

  • She is a poet. Each word, so beautiful. I can't say enough about Patti and her words and music...may she continue to move others.

  • I believe these were the lyrics to Patti's (and late husband Fred Smith) song, "People Have the Power". It was first released in 1988 on her album Dream of Life. Patti is a poet in her own right however and I think most of her songs could stand on their own without "music".
