Jesse Crawford's interpretation of a 1920s song "When Day is Done" (De Sylva - Katscher) on the Wurlitzer organ, recorded in 1927. This is my favorite version of this song.
Slideshow includes pictures from 1900s-1920s, of streets, buildings, cars, simple people and what-not. (And a little guy in the pouring rain is indeed Buster Keaton.)

  • I have a later version of this by Jesse that I will post. I like this one very much, thank you Margo.

  • @pax41 Please, do post it Bob! I'd love to hear as many versions of it as possible! By the way, do you know if Jesse ever recorded "Stardust"? I love this composition as much as "When Day is Done".

  • Sounds great and sure I have this one but have never got around to posting it. Do you have many of his recordings?

  • Oh no, not many, and nothing rare. I'm still new to this music. That's why I'm here - to find and listen to more! I posted this one because I didn't find it anywhere on YouTube and thought it had to be here too.

  • Thanks for this rendition of "When Day Is Done." I wish I could find a YouTube of Jesse Crawford playing "Estrelita/Little Star" on the Mighty Wurlitzer. My 1920's RCA Black Label grammophone record is quite worn out. He uses the various organ voices and chimes to good effect in his glorious performance, which is possibly his greatest. I hope someone can post "Estrelita" someday for all to enjoy.

I used to own this recording. Do you have "Swingin' Down the Lane" by Jesse Crawford? It was a 33-1/3 record which had a black cover and a black to hat and organ pipes coming out of it. I loaned it to a friend and that was the end of it. Rats!!! If you have it, please post. Thanks so much! I haven't heard this in YEARS!!!!! Thanks a bunch!

  • Beautiful Crawford recording. This was also a big hit for Paul Whiteman and his orch. I like the the photos you included - very realistic scenes of the early 20's.

  • Great-TNX!!

  • Reminds me of when theaters had organ music before the shows, intermission and as you were leaving. Very enjoyable....thank you...

  • Wow this is an excellent sound. The organ has a very vaudeville feeling about it. Wonderful haunting sound!!!!
