Antonio Vivaldi

All'ombra di sospetto, RV 678
cantata per soprano, flauto traverso e basso continuo

In this recording:
Catherine Bott
New London Consort
Conducted by: Philip Pickett

Original Text:

All'ombra di sospetto
il mio costante affetto
perde alquanto la fede,
e a beltà lusinghiera
ei poco crede.

Avezzo non è il core
amar beltà d'amore
ch'addolcisca il penar
con finti vezzi.
Se lusinghiero è il dardo,
ogni piacer è tardo,
affinchè l'adorar
per forza sprezzi.

Translation (by MehdiCaps)

In the shadow of suspicion,
my constant affection
has lost much of its faith,
and doesn't trust anymore
this deceiving beauty.

My heart is not accustomed
to fall in love with a beauty
that sweetens the pain
with feigned cajolery.
If Cupid's dart is deceptive,
all pleasures are late,
and adoration
eventually becomes contempt.

  • The instruments devour her sound...sounds so weak. :\

  • great work, it is a marvelous reference for studying.

    Thank you so much!

  • @violadude2 Although the score does call for a flauto traverso, that is, a "cross" flute like the modern Boehm concert flute, and not a flauto dolce (recorder), in this performance orphan567 is correct: A recorder has been substituted, the so-called "voice flute" pitched in D (Re) as is the baroque *single-key* traverso.

  • @orphan567 No it's a baroque flute, They were fatter and wooden and had less keys and for reasons I cannot comprehend this makes it sound like a recorder.

  • is that a recorder?

  • esto es maravilloso

  • hmmm...this singer doesn't improvise much in the da capo. Well, I guess it's not that suitable to be adding crazy embellishments for this particular aria.

    Great performance!

  • I suspect that he doesn't actually play "flauto traverso"; that's a little harder to master. But I think he does pretty well for himself, and it works this way.

  • Great performance Why does the score says "flauto traverso" but Pickett plays "flauto dolce"?

  • Amazing, Amazing, I love it, thank you...

    thank you very much!!!!

    =)
