@DesertPunkStudios  well my theory is the wings were added to reduce trace amounts of damage.remember that it was a new technology and they probably only found out after heeros missions that it would receive damage on entry.so they added the wing shielding after discovering that to protect it and reduce maintenance.

While the wings do have purpose, they are more or less design aesthetic, they're there because they look pretty. Personally I liked the original ver of Wing Zero, as all its weapons were integrated into the Neo-Bird fighter mode. And as for atmospheric shielding, the Neo-Bird Fighter has entered the atmosphere unassisted and unshielded with little problem many times. In truth the Wings prevent the integration of the dual mega particle rifle and the shield.

Wing Zero is my favourite Gundam, but the Angelwings just have no point

One may wonder why those Virgo units didn't deploy the shield defensors

(Energy forcefield to block small beam weaponry). Probably underestimating the Zero custom as a minor threat.
