Dr. Burke D. Sorenson received his Bachelors of Music Education and his Masters of Music in Orchestral Conducting from Brigham Young University. He pursued doctoral studies in Music Education at the University of Utah, and he currently holds a PhD in Education with emphasis in Higher Education Music Leadership from Capella University in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He studied Suzuki pedagogy with Judy Bossuat at the Intermountain Suzuki String Institute and has registered his Suzuki Book 1 Training with the Suzuki Association of the Americas. He holds a level one Kodaly certificate with a studio string teaching emphasis from the Intermuse Academy. Dr. Sorenson studied violin with Vesna Gruppman, Cynthia Richards, and Loi Anne Eyring. He studied viola with Andrew Dabczynski.

Dr. Sorenson has a solid background in the public schools and is one of a handful of educators with a valid Utah Level 3 license with music endorsement. He taught orchestra and general music at Lehi Junior and Senior High Schools and at Amelia Earhart Elementary School in Provo, Utah. Dr. Sorenson recently served as the Director of Bands and Orchestras at Payson Junior High School. He currently heads the Instrumental Music Division at Merit College Preparatory Academy in Springville, Utah.

Dr. Sorenson has held several higher education positions in diverse settings. He has been an adjunct faculty member at BYU, where he taught orchestra and studio violin, Utah Valley State College, Snow College, and a faculty associate at Western Governors University. Mr. Sorenson is currently also an adjunct faculty member at Salt Lake Community College and an instructor at BYU.

Dr. Sorenson has a great deal of podium time as a conductor. He founded and conducted the Payson Junior High School Jazz and Percussion Ensembles, the Center Street Musical Theatre Orchestra, the Utah Valley Chamber Players Preparatory Orchestra, and the BYU New Horizons Orchestra. He has guest conducted the American Fork Symphony and the Pleasant Grove Orchestra. He currently conducts the Salt Lake Community College Chamber Orchestra, the Taylorsville Community Orchestra, and the Pleasant Grove Orchestra.

Dr. Sorenson possesses a solid instrumental performance background on the violin, viola, and string bass. He has performed with the Utah Symphony (including tours and the Deer Valley Music Festival), American Fork Symphony, Utah Regional Ballet, Utah Valley Symphony, Payson Civic Band, Nebo Philharmonic Orchestra, Westminster Symphony, Nachtmusik Orchestra, and BYU Philharmonic Orchestra. His string quartet world premiered Murray Borens Kolob for piano quintet on live KBYU-TV and Radio.

Dr. Sorenson is a sought after clinician and adjudicator throughout Utah. He has published articles in the American Teacher Journal, the Instrumentalist, Student Band and Orchestra magazine, and New Horizons International Music Association. He also authored two books which are available on amazon.com and elsewhere. He and his wife Sarah, who is also an educator, reside in Payson, Utah with their four children.
