Each year The York Waites lead a procession around the City of York during which the Sheriff's men (and women) stop at each of city's main bars* to proclaim that "All manner of whores, theives, dice players and other unsavoury folk" be welcomed to the city as long as they do so in reverence of the hight feast of yule. The Sheriff's Riding takes place on the Feast of Saint Thomas (21st December).
*Bar is the medieval word for a fortified gate with a portcullus and barbican - not somewhere to go drinking!)
