I have to disagree with you. Reagan was an amiable fool. The truly evil people in his administration were George HW Bush, Dick Cheney, Ronald Rumsfeld and the rest of the neocons.

Nice job, although I have occasionally had arguments with friends and colleagues about Reagan. I would say that the Iran-contra scandal deserved prosecution, but on the other hand, he did seem to recognize the value of Gorbachev's ascendancy. Of course, it does occur to me as I type this that any mildly intelligent U.S. President would have seen the opportunity thus presented, and acted upon it.

The reworking of history is a constant theme of societies - I am fascinated and horrified at the same time by the current American Conservatives to rewrite American history for political ends - sanctifying the "FOUNDING FATHERS" and demonising others - claiming they are the true heirs of groups whose policies they still oppose.

It was bad enough when Nixon was elected but for me Reagan signaled the end of the American experiment. I was taught that one of the basic tenets of American democracy was the idea that "might does not make right", and that this was the basis of our success. Amazing the bullshit you'll believe when you're young!
