You don't need to purchase origami paper, I use printer paper and then trim to the desired size.

I have another question, Sara.
I was making this model for the first time but when folding the tree layers from letter sized paper, the model gets too small, too fast. I was decreasing the tree layers in increments of around 25% ( shaving a quarter off the edges ). Do you think the model will still have the same effect if I decrease the tree layers in increments of around 20% ( shaving around a fifth off the edges )?
I look forward to your response.

Thank you for this excellent tutorial, Sara!
I wish you and your family a Merry Christmas and all the best for 2012!
I don't have enough sizes of origami paper. :( Ah well. So... do you plan on doing any origami paper giveaways anytime soon? :P

@CanwllCorfe615 You can cut larger squares to smaller squares. For example, I started with five 15 cm (6in) squares and cut down 3 of them. Also, you don't need to use exactly these sizes. Using slightly larger or smaller gaps between the paper sizes will still work, and you can change the look and feel of the tree with it to match your taste.

@fguarnieri1 Thanks for designing it, making the crease pattern available, and - last but not least - giving me permission to demonstrate it. :)
