Story of Peter the great, Tsar of Russia from 1682, starring Maximillian Schell as adult Peter. Although historically not very accurate, Its about his struggle with his sister Sophia and the Streltsy in his early life for the throne of Russia. This TV series shows Peter's efforts to 'westernize' Russia, and treason from his son.
I really think the bulk of the religious references made in this film were to point out the attitude of Peter towards western secularism, progress and change,in contrast to hierarchical constancy, cultural stasis and church control. The Eastern Orthodox Church does not and has never altered its views for any political party, monarch or idealogy.(Quite honestly, something to be admired,in my book.)Peter took enormous pains to incorporate European ideas and ideals to 'better' the Russia he loved.

@nePfarious I am not going to get into a religious debate with You; however, on more than one occasion, Jesus said that the End of Times was at hand... during the lifetime of those in His presence as He spoke. You should check out the books of Matthew (10:23, 16:28, 23:36 and 24:29-34) , Mark (9:1, 13:30-31), Luke (9:27, 21:25-33).
The disciples Peter, John, and James, along with the Apostle Paul, ALL wrote of Their beliefs that They were living in the "End Times".

@captkwinter The '40's & '50's.- Constant references to religion, Christianity in a positive light. Currently every other religion forwarded or favored while Christianity and Christiansare shown to be the bane of the world, fanatical and ignorant. I did not say Atheism alone. I mentioned HW and the media. You cannot hear the name Jesus unless it is a curse word. Enough said. You have your opinion and I have mine.

@mvies77 this was made in 1986, how "past" are the movies you're talking about? and since when has christianity been a target of ridicule in this country? how could you possibly think that atheists are somehow pulling the strings and choosing what you see in the media? they're less than 10% of the population

So true. Atheists and Hollywood omit words and phrases, change, take out of context and even add incorrect words and phrases when and wherever they want, to demean, ridicule and destroy even a hint of true Christianity. So different from movies in the past.

"Then this saying went out among the brethren that this disciple would not die. Yet Jesus did not say to him that he would not die, but "If I will that he remain till I come, what is that to you? This is the disciple that testifies of these things..." (John 21:23&24).
Wish these scriptwriters would do some research before taking cheap shots at scripture.
