  • good version sse also the version of SAX GORDON // THE KILLER

  • Upon relistening I like this version, don't know what I was thinking back then.

  • Dude, the wonderful thing about jazz is that nothing needs to be static. Have you never heard "Angel Eyes" at breakneck pace? "Airegin" unspooled into a slow, walking blues? It's what it's all about. Nothing needs to be the same any two times you hear it. Isn't that what was so shattering when Dizzy and Parker went totally out of the box with "All the Things You Are?"

This is a kicking arrangement, and actually it retains a lot of the gorgeous noir shading in the backup horn lines.

  • Nice Chart! and Great solos! I t would have been nice to have a bit of the Ballad version for the intro and ending,,, Is a copy of of this chart for sale? I've got a lot of arrangements for trade or sale...

    Sincerely,

    Walt Andrus

  • Sorry guys, but in revisiting my own review, I realized I made a typo in the song title!!! Obviously I meant Melancholy Serenade and NOT Melancholy baby.

(The " BABY" is one big bone of a tune)lol.. Forgive me Jay!!

  • I think JAY PATTEN did a fantastic job with his version of MELANCHOLY BABY. He took my old favorite Jackie Gleason tune and branded it with his own creative feel.He sucessfully got a 50s sound from his alto sax utilizing his tastefully selected but (not overdone) improvisational talent to carefully fit the mood into this great Gleason song. Enough to make it a pleasure to hear once again. Great work Jay!

  • This doesn't do right to the intention of this song.

The melancholy and the serenade are both gone in this gratuitous jazz styling.

  • Jay, you are the man!
