Deleted scenes on the Earl of Essex from the drama 'Elizabeth I' starring Helen Mirren as the Queen and Hugh Dancy as the Earl of Essex.
On the scene where the Earl of Essex and Earl of Southampton watches William Shakespeare's play Richard II:
This interesting scene, which shouldn't have been cut from the series, depicts the Earl of Essex and companions watching a production of Shakespeare's play Richard II. This play did not sit well with Elizabeth; she identified herself with Richard II, an anointed king who was deposed by his cousin Henry Bolingbroke. Elizabeth feared treason and any challenge to her authority. When the play was published the deposition scene was cut out by the publishers, probably with knowledge that it would not receive royal approval.
Robert Devereux, 2nd Earl of Essex was one of Elizabeth's favourites. However he soon became frustrated with the lack of power he had combined with his belief that his enemies exerted influence over the Queen. His close friend, Henry Wriothesley, 3rd Earl of Southampton was Shakespeare's patron. Shortly before Essex's failed rebellion of 1600, some of his supporters paid for a performance of the play. Its connotations to the act of treason they would commit spoke volumes.
This scene is fictitious however it conveys brilliantly the level of resentment that Essex had because of his perceived limited level of power. I also included these scenes because Hugh Dancy was just superb as Robert Devereux.
Really? On the Region 1 DVD?

I own the region 2 DVD and the deleted scenes are part of the special features. It is odd that they would not include this on the region 1 DVD though...

For some odd reason I'm finding it hard to write comments on here, so hopefully this will work:
Someone else has already uploaded the deleted scenes on youtube.
