Most college jazz band music is in the swing style. If you get the book (it's cheap) and learn to chop chords, you will be way ahead of the game. I - a classical guitarist - too was in a college jazz band and had to figure all this out. I've seen very good jazz guitarist screw up the big gig by trying to do too much and playing the wrong voicings. Listen to Freddie Green on youtube.

Teaching (The George van Epps) broken set of four note chord is basically what is shown here. Translation 234-6 strings.

Which give you 4 - C7 chords up the neck before repeating.

Fundamentals learned correctly tend to help when learning concept books.
