20 years ago, August 19, 1991 to August 21. Attempted coup in the Soviet Union. Hard-line members of the Communist Party tried to seize control from President Mikhail Gorbachev. The coup failed after just 3 days, and eventually led to the collapse of communism and the disintegration of the USSR.
Russian Republics' Parliament, August 1991. Mikhail Gorbachev's speech in front of deputies in presence of Yeltsin after the putsch (Moscow August 1991 attempted military coup), threatening to resign if Soviet Republics jeopardize the Soviet Union Treaty.
On August 24, 1991, Mikhail Gorbachev resigned as First Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union.
