@brawny03 "Many of the old time skills are being lost". sad, but true. On a brighter note, people like yourself, and some others here on Youtube are trying to keep many of them alive. The biggest problem is experience. The people with the most experience at using the old time skills are generally the ones who don't use Youtube, or even the Internet for that matter. What that means is the young are doomed to "re-invent the wheel", unless we can find ways to record soon to be forgotten knowledge.

Wow. That's thinking out of the box. Great alternative emergency fuel too. Thanks.

Sounds like if works well and looks simple enough, and burning as long as it does, seems like a great idea.. Does it give off any oil smell when cooking? I'm thinking that scent might really be repulsive.

i'm glad to see another one of your very good vids!

Wonderful idea Carol, is there very much smell to it? Thanks a bunch for uploading a new video, I've been hoping you would. : )
This idea has been around for quite awhile. You can do the same thing by using a used oil filter from an oil change. They burn a long time, but it's a dirty burn. Much cleaner to use wood or similar fuel. In an absolute survival situation though, this idea would keep someone with a way to cook or heat water. Thanks!

@mrbr549 Thanks, Mrbr, good points. I wanted to explore this idea as a "lamp" too, if one wanted a light in camp without needing to hunt for large amounts of dry wood. This little hobo stove offers a long burn time for little or no effort.
Then, the amount of heat actually surprised me and so I tried heating water. Many of the old time skills are being lost in this generation of prepackaged and preassembled.

I found at firs there is little or no smell. Once its burned awhile it has that oil smell, something you would use outside, or keep outside. I think of it more as a survival skill than actual long distance backpacking thing. I used about 1/4 cup of oil in this project, and one empty salt container.

mmm its one idea i suppose in ultra mega survival situation this may / will get you out of the poop.... but carrying "engine oil" mmmm peeps are going away from this like the meth , white sprits, alcohol . burners all good till you have a spillage or sim in your bag / pack you now have flammable liquids on near all ya kit and no fuel. use the hobo with twigs pine cones ect if you want an easy fire start use cotton wool soaked in Vaseline or on the wood
peace n love all
stay safe pip

@PiPphiltitley Yes, this is definitly Survival Stuff. I was inspired by The Road, a totally appocylptic event. All the unused cars with their engines full of motor oil, and discarded paper and cardboard. Motor oil can't be lit like other fuels, by itself, with a match, hense the container of flamables are needed to faciliate. And yes, I would carry the oil seperate, in a leak proof bottle,in a plastic ziploc and not make these ahead.
