This video documents the process Jess Wilson and I explored, working with the life cast taken from pal Christian Valka. In the video we prep the mould and then pour in the various bits and pieces. Lastly the mould is cracked open to reveal the masterpiece. Fun times! - Jared Franks

  • I mean separating the silicone from the mould. I did use Vaseline on our subject, which worked fine but it contaminated the first batch of silicone - prevented curing for some reason. Based on that experience I would advise against using a thin coat as a substitute to J-Wax.

So next step, we scrubbed the mould thoroughly clean of Vaseline, sprayed it inside with the J-Wax release agent and used a different silicone product, Platsil Gel 10, which worked a treat.

  • Nicely done!! try Bodydouble by smoothon...it's about twice the price of alginate, but you can use the mold over and over...and cast almost anything into it...

  • Hey Joey, thank you. I used a product called Clone FX, that's the purple stuff, supplied by Barnes in Australia. It is designed to be reused over and over, but we had trouble separating the mould and thought it easier just to destroy it :)

  • Do you mean separating it from the subject? Or the silicone from the mold after you poured it? There is a release agent for the bodydouble that can be used on the human model, and the inside of the mold...I didn't try it yet, but I hear a thin coat of vaseline will not inhibit the silicone's cure, and works well as a separator..to thicken the silicone so it can be brushed bodydouble has an agent called thivex..it ends the continuous rotating of the mold, and can be painted into the mold..
