Donation of Constantine - Lies of the Faithful

The Donation of Constantine is often called the most famous forgery of all time, but actually very few people know about it outside of academic circles. The early church forged this document saying the the Roman Emperor Constantine granted vast tracts of the Empire and power to the pope and his successors. The church used the document to justify its authority over the monarchs of the western Europe and paved the way for many of the theocracies of the Middle Ages.

I've never heard of this, but it doesn't surprise at me all.  Religious people have no way to substantiate even their most basic claims of their god's existence, so it doesn't really shock me that they'd forge documents like this. It's another form of apologetics (read: bullshit).

@onerycock I think most people don't really know about this documents. Catholics who study church history or historians of the medieval period generally know about it. But it's out there, a quick Google search will bring it up. So nobody's covering up the document.

But I think if more people know about the consistently blatant way that religions lie to people, the more wary they'll grow. It's not just a new thing that they're lying. As you hinted at, it's been going on from the beginning.
