Grigori Perelman was born in Leningrad, Soviet Union (now Saint Petersburg, Russia) on 13 June 1966, to Jewish[6] parents, Yakov (who now lives in Israel) and Lubov. Grigori's mother Lubov gave up graduate work in mathematics to raise him.

He has a younger sister, Elena, who is also a scientist. She received a Ph.D. from Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel.

Has is even occurred to this mathematician being interviewed that Perelman may see the award as a way of others making political advancement through what is basically Perelman's own hard work.

Why can't people get it? He does not want the award and he does not want the money so go and pester someone else with your glitzy pageantry of meaningless awards!

As for people referring to his ethnic/religious origin and claiming vicarious triumph for that - leave it out he is an individual!

It's apparently convenient to skip on the specifics of his origin. For otherwise Russians would be compelled somewhat out of their hate for the Jews (the people "guilty of everything", you know - responsible for Russians' alcohol addiction, husbands' beating their wives, the Neo-Nazi problem, for the sub-zero temperatures in Russian winter, etc).
