DON JOHNSON BIG BAND
Taking Every Detour There Is

Let's do the math. You've been out of school for several years now and I bet you've missed it. Don Johnson Big Band comes from a country populated by 5.5 million people. They've sold an amount of records equivalent to roughly 2% of Finland's population. Reflect upon that, because it's kind of insane, especially considering they make music in a foreign language. It's like an English band rapping in rapid-fire French and selling a million and a half records in the UK.

The insanity doesn't end there. As far as biomass goes, they're not big. There's only four of them and they're skinny little bastards one and all. Their connection with Don Johnson is tenuous, to say the least. Yes, there was a visit to a movie set in Canada that one time, but that's another story.

Are there any dependable facts in this topsy-turvy world you've entered, you ask? Is anything what it seems?

Don Johnson Big Band IS big in a way that demonstrates the voodoo nature of the business. They use English in a market dominated by Finnish. Commercially, hip hop was never a sure shot in Finland, but their first number one hit was called One MC, One Delay, so the urge to b-boy corral them is understandable, if grossly simplistic.

Selling CDs out of the trunk of a car before making it big and showing off your rent-a-McMansion, decorated by Beyoncé's mom, on MTV Cribs is a mainstay of hip hop mythology. This myth travels to cushy little welfare states with greater ease than the one about coming up the hard way through a freakonomic drug dealing hierarchy in the 'hood. Don Johnson Big Band took public transportation and sold CDs out of their backpacks. Eventually, the backpack morphed into Sony and The Little Album that Could sold 20,000.

Since then the band has undertaken an epic amount of plundering and pillaging in genres hot and not around the world. It doesn't really take any balls to incorporate jazz elements into your music these days, but DJBB can take eurobeat, steel drums and choirs of innocent, innocent children, mash it up with some funky beats, sax from the heat of the 1980s night and Energizer Bunny rapping that actually makes sense. They did all this and managed to become a crossover, cross-generational, cross-cultural favorite. The 2nd album went platinum, the one after that gold and it's still selling.

They've been a major concert draw on the club circuit, as well as all the biggest summer festivals since 2003. The popularity has been remarkably steady, existing outside the album-tour grind. They've taken their show to stages in Germany, France, Netherlands, Denmark, Lithuania and Estonia, as well as the biggest festivals in both Japan and China.

All this in ten years of iconoclasm, of never scripting anything, of trusting themselves to do what felt right, of not researching the market...

That's pretty insane.

And it's what we all need.
