Hello everybody, and all you science furs out there in TV land, ScorchGD here presenting a mysterious device originally invented by a Mr. Edward Leedskanlin that he called a "Perpetual Motion Holder".

Which is an electromagnet that continues to hold a load after power is disconnected!
That's right folks, an electromagnet that continues to hold it's load after power is disconnected!

As you can see here, the knife switch is in the off position and there is only a slight, residual magnetism in the electromagnet.

But, when I connect the coils to the battery, it then becomes a very strong magnet that holds this load and, as you can see, the magnet is now strong enough to not only lift its own weight but most of the weight of the particle board, switch, and lead acid battery.

So far this is a normal operation of an electromagnet which is a device commonly used to pick up scrap metal then release its load by shutting off power.

But THIS is where I am now going to defy the laws of physics by shutting off power but continue to lift the load of the magnet, board, switch and battery.

As you can see the power is off but the electromagnet is STILL HOLDING!
In fact I have now seen this effect continue for several days and there is no end in sight!

So, to all you physics gurus out there, can you explain this?
HOW does this work? Doesn't conventional science say the magnetic field is supposed to collapse after power is disconnected?

This demonstration makes it clear there is still some form of magnetic current flowing or expanded magnetic field which remains after power is disconnected.

How does THIS fall within the laws of physics?

But WAIT, this demonstration is not over!

As you can see here, I have installed a 10mm LED on the other side of this knife switch.
What will happen if I connect these coils to the LED then break the flow of magnetic current simply by pulling the load off the electromagnet?

Did you see that? A VERY bright flash of energy!
I will do this again, charge the electromagnet, switch over to LED and BAM!
Here we go again . . . BAM.

As you can see here, after the magnetic current flow has been broken, the electromagnet is no longer holding its load and there are no bright, energy, flashes from the LED.

And, as you can there are no external wires underneath and this is simply a piece of particle board.

So, YOU tell ME, does modern science have an explanation for an electromagnet that continues to hold a load after power is disconnected?

Excerpt from http://www.leedskalnin.com/LeedskalninsPerpetualMotionHolder.html

Researchers have continued to be interested in this device because it defies natural laws of physics and is unexplainable by conventionally excepted electromagnetic theory. Modern science says it is impossible, but Edward Leedsklanin's theory says it is simple, natural, and that it's workings are misunderstood because there are some important aspects of modern science being taught in schools that are wrong.
Perhaps more intriguing than the ability to store energy indefinitely, the Perpetual Motion Holder can act like a living thing; and because it operates on the principles of a theory with a sound base of understanding, Leedskalnin is able to use this device as a real working depiction of the atom and the earth. Throughout his writings Leedskalnin subtly points to a lack in a base understanding in all branches of science, but is quite thorough in his disparaging of J.J. Thomson's electron invention.

Coils used are off-the-shelf 24VDC coils cannibalized from a Maytag Dishwasher Solenoid Valve part #901948 mounted on an off-the-shelf 3/8" round, steel, bar formed into a "U" shape. battery is 1.2 AH 12 volt. Switch is radio shack part #275-1537 and white LED is off my shelf originally from a surplus supplier and I think it's actually an 8mm LED and not a 10mm LED.

  • I have read Ed's books. Long ago. But working on other experiments such as a desktop replication of the Muller Motor Dynamo or the April Wind version of a Rodin Coil. I did the replication of the perpetual motion holder because it was quick, and easy, and a really good demonstration tool that I can take to other places and show to friends.

  • Just magnetic remanence !

    Look it up on Wikipedia.

  • @overunitydotcom While true there is a slight magnetic remanence (residual magnetism) in the ferrous U and ferrous Bar, the actual STRONG, load carrying, magnetism instantly disappears as soon as the load bar is removed, causing a collapse of the field and a flash of the LED. And strength does not return again until the holder is re-energized by the battery again. This is not a magnetic remanance that requires the battery to restart it in order to carry a load again.

  • try removing the close loop iron very slowlly and check the change in the leds brightness. i bet that as fast you pull the bar from the u shape iron core you will get more energy. meaning i am not mistaken here.. this is e=mc2 i bet the speed and pulling the bar with the magnetic energy allign to the e=mc2

  • @vinshbrief It does appear to be possible to slow down the collapse of the field by carefully "rolling" the bar off the magnet as opposed to just pulling it off. If I carefully, and slowly, remove the bar by tilting it to one side; there is no light from the LED. As if the energy slowly "leaks" out as opposed to a sudden release or sudden collapse of the magnetic field or magnetic "current" as Ed calls it.

  • Hi dear Scorch. Are you able to show in other video charged U shape with other additional iron part interacting? let say, take 1 iron nail put on to the top of flat plate and show U shape magent force at charged position. Also it is interesting to see all this process with compass at both stages,Please my friend:)

  • @MrArrow1961 No point to make another video. Other than the ends of the horseshoe, that hold the bar, or the residual magnetism that is there during all configurations, (On or Off) and all parts of the horseshoe, there does not appear to be any additional magnetic field. Another bar on top of the first bar is NOT attracted. Its ALL flowing within the closed loop; like a toroid. Additional experiments; see youtube user: codygillespie

  • @ScorchGD I'm assuming you have read all of Leedskalnin's magnetic writings. Any chance you could conduct some of the other experiments Ed wrote about ? Your display of Ed's perpetual motion holder was perfect. Thank you very much.

  • Hi there! I'm not great Leedskalnin but when I stumbled upon the effect playing around with relay I have concluded that current makes the domains oriented making chains throughout looped core. When you turn off current they remain in their configuration as they are closed. When you rip the bar off the core the chains are broken and domains change position back. This makes Mfield change and the light flashes. Interesting anyway.)

  • Now....if we could utilize this principle to produce free ummmmm...."work".....then we'd reallyt have something useful
