Here is Dave Harvey of Gibson playing an early 30's Gibson Fern block inlay mandolin during Itchin to Pick at the Galt House in Louisville Ky. March 5 of 2011. Dave comments on the quality and tone of the instrument. Wood quality reminiscent of Loar era mandolins.

  • Not sure what you mean......help me out, thanks David

  • And.....the finish work is very 20's, a person who knew the craft. Not varnish, but tasteful lacquer work.

  • Thanks, you are so right.........

  • Nice version of "Forked Deer" on a great sounding -- and beautiful looking -- instrument.

  • no volume

  • And I should add no one knows that better than Dave Harvey!

  • Great picking and of course there is evidence that during the late 20's and early 30's Gibson was not making new F-5's but rather finishing up the glut of partially completed instruments made during the Loar years. So that mandolin may have started life in the early 20's and was finished up when an order came in a decade later! (<:

  • cool stuff

  • Awesome !!!
