Matthew Morrison in South Pacific "You've Got To Be Carefully Taught"

Here's Matthew Morrison before he became a TV star in "Glee" singing "You've Got To Be Carefully Taught" from the Lincoln Center revival of Rodgers and Hammerstein's South Pacific. PBS is going to air the show live in August but it is still unclear whether Morrison will be reprising his role as Lieut. Cable. He should, even if he has to accept PBS scale, because a permanent record of his performance would be invaluable to his career and resume long after "Glee" is forgotten.

You have to remember that this is not a professional recording. You're hearing his voice through a theater PA with the treble greatly enhanced.

Most of the folks posting here seem to be fairly young. I doubt many of you understand just how "dangerous" this song was when it was first written. In fact, it created a major furor and many wanted it totally removed from the script or any production of the play. Hammerstein refused to do that. When South Pacific played in Georgia, it was denounced in the state hall there as "propaganda". Unfortunately, 63 years after it was first written, it's still somewhat relevant.

@ieguy3 believe me it is STILL relevant. There are still people who live in this cycle of teaching prejudice. It's terrifying to admit, but I had a friend today who was a victim of a hate crime and this is exactly what we realized the heart of the matter was. We're from an urban area and we're both in more of a country town now and it's unbelieveable to us and frankly heartbreaking.

I just realized that while Matt plays Marine Lieutenant Cable, he is def wearing Marine Captain/Navy Lieutenant bars on that uniform.

He is amazing. I'm definitely using this; my school is doing South Pacific this march and I was cast as Lieut. Cable. I just learned this song yesterday, from the teacher I mean, and couldn't get it. Watching him will definitely help me. Thanks so much for posting!
