A snippet of Act III, Scene II from the OCHS production of William Inge's Picnic. My sloppy synopsis:

It's early morning. Millie takes a secret smoke on the stairs. Her mom, Flo, comes out fretting over her other daughter, Madge, who is presumed to have been inappropriately approached by tough guy Hal, the best friend of Madge's boyfriend, sophisticated Alan. Flo chastises neighbor Helen for bringing riff-raff like Hal into the neighborhood. Meanwhile, Rosemary is eagerly awaiting the arrival of her long-time beau, Howard, from whom she expects a marriage proposal that morning (after all, they finally made love the night before). Alan shows up in anguish over Hal's betrayal and waits to comfort Madge, oblivious to her feelings for his friend (Madge and Hal had in fact also bumped pretties the night before). While Alan waits, Millie tell him she's always liked him. Madge and Alan talk. Howard and Rosemary head off to get married. Somewhere in the middle of all that the Bomber buddies show up to razz Madge... And scene.

  • Oh my goodness. The bomber buddies made me laugh so hard.

  • i still haven't been able to figure out why this video gets relatively so many more hits than my others... it's definitely the silliest and most embarrassing of the bunch, hahah!

  • wow....

  • yeah. and the "bomber buddies": i still can't figure out why in high school 16 year olds play 16 year olds like they're 9 year olds. so much yet to learn way back then... but definitely fun memories with good friends!

  • Wow-Picnic turned into a comedy. That just breaks my heart.

  • Oh noes, don't break! :) Only some scenes were played up like this. I think this one was intended as an antidote to the previous, very heavy scenes with Hal/Madge and Howard/Rosemary. At the time I remember thinking parents would fall out of their chairs watching "their babies" live the lives those characters lived the night of the picnic! thanks for watching!

  • haha, probably! its been so long since i've seen a professionally staged version i don't even remember what our high school changed here (other than Bomber becoming Bomber Buddies). cheers!

  • You changed this...

    A lot.

  • I think my skirt should have been credited in the program... it has a lot of work to do.
